How important is a cover letter when applying for a job?

I have a question for any HR or other hiring personnel. How important is a cover letter when applying for a job. Im applying mostly online and mostly in the finance field. I want to know how much time I should invest in writing cover letters or if I should even write them.

If the job requests a cover letter sent with the resume, then spend time on it. Cover letters are what can get you the job, or at least an interview for the job. Resumes can be somewhat standard, but you have a chance to shine through with a cover letter. If the job doesn’t request a cover letter, it’s not necessary to complete one. If you want to, then go for it. However, if they had truly wanted one, they would have made it mandatory. Good luck to you.
