Do you have to wash your baby clothes before they wear them first?
filed in One Bytes on Mar.25, 2010
Usually I buy my clothes and I just wear it straight away without washing them first.
I was wondering if I am spouse to wash the baby’s clothes first before he wears them,
also wondering why?

I’m not sure about other moms but I never new clothes. I only wash them after my babies wear.

i would……and you should……there might be loose dye that can irritate the babys skin, plus u never know, maybe that specific shirt was in an open box and maybe a rat crawled across it…..its just better to play it safe

I usually wear my clothes straight from the store too, but if they are for your baby you should wash them first. They might contain chemicals from the manufacturing process or germs from a customer who returned or tried them on.

yeah you should because baby skin is so sensitive. I have allergic reactions to come clothing if I don’t wash them first and I hear it is the same with babies. I just washed all my new baby clothes last weekend preparing for my baby.

You should, yes. There are tons of chemicals on them from being shipped and stored. I admit now, at almost two, I don’t wash every single thing(i.e. we’re out, our son has leaked through his pants, and we’ve forgotten an extra pair so we have to buy something new) but for the most part I try to.

Wash EVERYTHING before you wear it! People’s hands have been all over it and you can’t know where everyone else has been!
///To see how clean some "new" clothes were, "GMA" bought everything from blouses to pants to underwear from three popular chain clothing stores ranging from high- to low-end and handed them over to Dr. Philip Tierno, director of microbiology and immunology at New York University, to test the 14 items for germs.
Tierno found disturbing results. There was flora, or bacteria, on several items.
"On this black and tan blouse we found representation of respiratory secretions, skin flora, and some fecal flora," Tierno said.
On a jacket, Tierno discovered evidence of feces, skin flora and respiratory secretions, especially in the armpit and "close to the buttocks," Tierno said.
The biggest surprise came when Tierno tested a silk blouse.
There, he said, he found vaginal organisms, yeast and more fecal germs.
Tierno said a couple of the items had extremely high counts of germs, far above normal.
"Some garments were grossly contaminated with many organisms … indicating that either many people tried it or … someone tried it on with heavy contamination," he said. "In a sense, you are touching somebody’s arm pit or groin. So you want to be protected that’s all.
"You may not come down with anything and, most cases you don’t, but it’s potentially possible," he added."///

you should always wash cloths before you wear them. especially for your baby. there are baby safe detergents you should use. the reason to washing them be for you wear them is because the manufacturers put a starch on the clothes to keep them nice on the racks at the stores. and that could make you sick.

I washed all of my son’s clothing before he wore them. I did this for 2 reasons…
1. To wash away anything on them that may irritate his skin, cause rashes etc
2. So if something was going to shrink, then it shrunk before he was too big for it.
It is your choice, but it is recommended to wash the clothing because babies have such sensitive skin and you want to avoid irritation.

For the first few months I washed everything. Now that she is older (5 months) I dont wash every little thing. Something that contains alot of dark dye I wash and onsies I wash, but I dont wash every little tee shirt first and I have never had a problem with her getting a rash or anything. Babies are exposed to tons of germs and things everywhere so that isnt a huge concern to me. Just heavy dyes and if my daughter had sensitive skin I would still do it.

With all the production scandals happening in China and so much clothes being manufactured in China … is this question even necessary?
There could be traces of formaldehyde. Have you ever smelled new clothes made in China, especially those with elaborate printing? Have you ever smelled the fresh vinyl of upholstery of your new car. Formaldehyde is carcinogenic and toxic. Some people get rashes from wearing new clothes because they are allergic to the residual chemicals in the clothes.
Formaldehyde is effective in its use as a disinfectant and more so as a fungicide to prevent growth of mold. Hmm … I wonder what they use to prevent mold growth in garments shipped all the way across the oceans. Formaldehyde is used in printing in the textile industry.
20 years ago – it was lead wicks in candles. People were buying stiff-wick candles made in China and having romantic time over the years lighting candles at home. People were thinking, hmm…, how come the candles from Mexico are so lousy because their wicks are not erect.
Guess what, the wicks in the candles from China were stiffened with lead and other toxic metals! The people found that out when they tried to sell their houses and the inspector found lead deposits on walls and ceilings and the value of their house crumbled by 30%.
Better check if any of the buttons are metallic. Check if any part of the clothes have stiffened sections. Those guys over there are really irresponsible poisoning the whole world with their products one scandal after another.

some babies have more delicate skin than others, with my son i washed them at first, then tried to put them on him once not washed first. He was fine
hope this helps

you really should wash them before the baby wears them.
their skin is more sensitive than ours, and can have reactions to things that we do not. plus think about all the people that have potentially touched that clothing item, and how long its been sitting in a store collecting dust. pretty gross if you really think about it.

When my daughter was an infant i washed all her new clothes before she wore them. Now that she’s older i don’t do that anymore, never had any problems.
