How many pounds can you luggage bag be before airpots charge a fee?

Well im moving to chicago and im taking as much clothes as possible and i have a luggage case. Which weighs about 60 pounds and im planning to take a backpack with my labtop and some other items. Was wondering how many pounds is the limit before they charge me a fee and can i take the backpack with me in the plane and use my labtop. thanks you.

Overweight fees and checked bag fees are set by the airlines, not the airport. You can check the policies on the airline website. For example, the United policies are here: http://www.united.com/page/article/0,6722,52481,00.html . For United a 60 pound bag is considered overweight – the limit is 50 lbs. Within the US, Southwest is the only airline that don’t charge for 2 checked baggage, or if you have a first class ticket or are an elite member of their flier program. If not, depending on which airlines, every airline has different rates for the first or second baggage, some airlines charge less if you prepay on line vs paying at the airport counter when you check in. You have to check you own airline’s website to find out how much, generally it’s about $25 – $50 each. However every airline has the same weight allowance, each checked bag cannot weigh more than 50 lbs, any overweight would be charged extra. A third checked bag would initially be charged more than the first two, maybe $100 for 50 lbs.
Every airline allows 2 free carry on bags, a bigger one not more than 40 lbs that fits in the overhead bin plus a smaller one like a backpack that fits underneath the seat. The laptop is allowed to be brought with you on to the plane.

50 pounds southwest will give you two bags free under 50 lbs other airlines charge 15 for the first bag under 50 and 25 dollars for the second bag under 50 lbs
